I am very happy to announce it is nearly time for the first tournament of the year. The 2011 Golfsmack Open will consist of four rounds at Torrey Pines, to be played alongside the professionals on January 28-29th. Will we be able to outplay the pros? Will someone beat MacTHW’s current low round of 68 (...and I’m sure Ash wouldn’t mind if someone tried to beat his record high of 119). Who will walk away with the first tournament win of the new year?
I can’t believe you youngsters are back for another beating
by MacTHW
And so starts another night of smacktalk and golfing. binkdog brings an audience to the links. MacTHW is foolish enough to think he can play four rounds in one evening while Ash hops aboard the caboose of the Bogey-Express. These are your Friday night golfing headlines.
binkdog starts off the evening with a challenge at The Greenbrier. Although smack was in the air, all players started out very cautious, resulting in only two birdies and three bogies along the front nine, while everything else came up par. Ash and Mac would go into the turn at 34 each, one stroke over binkdog. The back nine saw the players come alive, scoring eleven birdies amongst the three players. binkdog was in hot pursuit of the leader MacTHW but ended up running out of real estate and handing a win to MacTHW, who crosses the finish line with a new course record of 65 (beating out binkdog’s previous 66), binkdog follows with a 68 and Ash trails with a 70.
Not even attempting to hide the fact that he is out to take the course records from those held by MacTHW, binkdog takes the players to a rain-soaked TPC Sawgrass. binkdog starts off with two consecutive birdies but quickly finds his bogey groove. MacTHW hits the turn one stroke behind binkdog, who now owns the lowest front nine record at 34. Ash finally escapes the clucthes of Dr. Bogey and plays a relatively error-free back nine. binkdog and MacTHW lock in battle as MacTHW tries to save his course record but has an epic FAIL on the 16th, carding a 9, which allows binkdog to skate to victory with a 67, setting a new course record along the way. MacTHW trundles home with a 71 and Ash a 78.
With that record broken, binkdog takes the gang to Cog Hill, another course where MacTHW holds the record. Things don’t start off very well, as neither Ash, binkdog nor the defending TPC Sawgrass champ can fend off the bogey affliction. MacTHW reaches the turn at 36, three strokes ahead of binkdog and nine ahead of Ash. At this point, there is coup at binkdog headquarters and control of “the telephone thingie” is seized by someone identified only as “binkette”, whose golfing claim to fame is having won a fistful of quarters in a putting contest when she was 12. Well…that’s good enough for this reporter. As it turns out, binkette’s commentary is far, far better than old man binkdog’s, so it has been decided that binkdog shall no longer be allowed on the air waves, and can only communicate via his new helper, binkette. Ash looks to make up lost ground on the back nine, starting out birdie - birdie. MacTHW also turns up the heat in order to save his course record at Sawgrass. Sensing that binkdog was struggling, unable to overcome wave of awesomeness poured on by MacTHW, binkette offers to show binkdog how to properly drive and putt the ball, which he stubbornly refuses until the 17th. binkette makes a great effort to save binkdog’s score, but a sudden blizzard in Texas leaves a snowman on the card. Although, in this writer’s humble opinion, the eight is three strokes better than the eleven binkdog would have gotten if he attempted to finish the hole on his own. Thanks to good fortune and a freak snowstorm, MacTHW retains his course record at Sawgrass, tieing it with a 69. binkdog scores a 77 and Ash an 82.
As if the evening wasn’t strange enough, MacTHW issues a challenge for a fourth round at Pinehurst No.2. binkdog, who was up past his bedtime, decided to accept the challenge. MacTHW, once again the defending champ, tries to fend off the binkdog attack but falls short of that goal, as he rounds the turn three strokes behind binkdog. Ash, who must have accidentally bought a Boginator Machine instead of a Puttinator Machine, limped through the front nine with a 47. Ash tries to run it around on the back but falls victim to a bogey ambush on the 15th. binkdog stumbles as well but recovers in time to claim victory for the round with a 69, which to his dismay, is not enough to grab the record record of 67. MacTHW follows with a 71 and Ash an 83.
All in all, very challenging games this evening. We shall see what Saturday night brings, especially now that binkdog has a new golf pro helping him out in his corner.
binkdog Eagles a Par 3, Brings Disarray to Thanksgiving Eve
by MacTHW
This Thanksgiving Eve is one that THW Golf’s Jim Furyk Award nominee, binkdog, won’t be forgetting for a while. He has secured the bragging rights for carding the very first hole-in-one in regulation play in THW Golf history. In other news, Ash pours himself more scotch and MacTHW can’t get his game together. These are your headlines for Thanksgiving Eve.
Ash, binkdog and MacTHW assembled at the first tee at East Lake GC for a three round night of pre-Turkey day golfing.
binkdog broke the spirits of his pals Ash and MacTHW very early on at East Lake. He starts off with birdie one the first hole and then goes on to cement his place in the record books by getting a hole-in-one on the Par 3 2nd, which he then follows up with yet another birdie on the 3rd. As Ash and MacTHW looked on in disbelief, it would appear as binkdog was going for a new overall low record for THW Golf. binkdog then went to play par for the rest of the front nine, gaining a comfortable lead over Ash and MacTHW, hitting the turn at a 4-under par 32. MacTHW is next with a 39 and Ash, all wheels already off the bus, a 54. As quickly as his star rose into the sky, binkdog went super-nova and fizzled out, not able to get much of anything going on the back nine. Ash can’t stay out of Bogey-Town and finishes the round in 3 digit territory—a 103. Mac takes second place with a 76 and binkdog, clinging to gains from his early success, wins the round with a 69—which, alas, is not enough to beat the course record of 67 (also held by binkdog).
Next up, TPC Boston. binkdog once again starts out strong. Ash, very comfortable in the caboose, elects to stay there. MacTHW has trouble finding the fairway, and being a man, refuses to ask for directions, whichleaves him picking through the cabbage for most of the front nine. binkdog commands a strong lead at the turn, ahead of MacTHW by 5 and Ash by 8 strokes. Ash and MacTHW accomplish nothing on the back nine, except handing binkdog yet an even bigger lead. binkdog takes round two with a 70, MacTHW a 79 and Ash an 89.
binkdog, emboldened by his two previous wins, challenges the players to one more round at Bethpage Black. binkdog steps up to the tee and starts off with birdie. MacTHW is able to match it while Ash opts for the double-bogey instead. MacTHW plays a nearly bogey-free front nine, only getting tripped up on the 7th. binkdog plays it better and rolls into the turn with a 31. Ash, who still hasn’t recovered from binkdog’s assault at East Lake, hits the turn at 48. MacTHW tries catching binkdog along the back nine, but binkdog only stumbles on the 17th, carding a bogey of the single variety. Not enough for MacTHW catch up in points. Ash finishes with a 91 and MacTHW a 68, while binkdog takes the overall Bethpage Black record from Jared with a 65.
Congrats to binkdog on the hole-in-one and becoming the single, sole member of the THW Golf Hole-In-One Club.
